The whole chapel will be renovated, and the first step is precisely the removal of the sculpture. The cross is thought to have been carved from the wood of the frigate Novara on which Emperor Maximilian travelled to Mexico and, lifeless, returned there to Trieste from where he was brought back to his homeland to be buried in Vienna, in the Capuchin Crypt. The artifact had already undergone restoration in the 1980s, but given its long exposure outdoors, a new series of works is needed to check for original layers to be brought to light, consolidate the pictorial film, clean the surfaces, and integrate the lost parts of the surface.
