THE STABLES
The Stables of Miramare Castle, designed by engineer Carl Junker for Maximilian of Habsburg, were built between 1856 and 1860.
The building, located on the road to the castle from Trieste, is situated on a sheltered and lush site, and is sufficiently far from the residence.
Consisting of a central body and two symmetrical side wings, it was intended for horses and carriages. In the interwar period, when the castle was inhabited by the Dukes of Savoy-Aosta, the Stables underwent works that partially altered its original appearance.
Restored by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities, they are used for temporary exhibitions. Since 2018, one wing hosts The BIOdiversity MArine Centre (BioMa), the immersive museum of the Miramare Marine Protected Area.
