The portrait of Empress Eugenia, in pendant with that of Emperor Napoleon III, is a copy of an official portrait that was completed in 1853 (now lost).
The Empress is portrayed in three-quarter profile while wearing a sumptuous white dress embellished by elaborate embroidery and lace. Winterhalter’s ability to render the elegance of clothing and the delicate faces of his female subjects was particularly appreciated by the Empress and the French court.
Napoleon III and Eugenia played an important role in convincing Maximilian to accept the title and duties of Emperor of Mexico. As such, Charlotte turned to Napoleon and Eugenia during the height of the difficulties and conflict with Juarez’s republican army in 1866, seeking help. However, in spite of Charlotte’s persistent requests, the emperor refused to send troops to support Maximilian.
