A valuable alliance between the Miramare Museum and the Burlo Garofalo Children’s Hospital in Trieste was signed today, on Italian National Palliative Care Day, through a collaboration agreement that includes a series of initiatives for children and families followed by the Regional Paediatric Palliative Care Network, coordinated by the Specialist Referral Centre established at the research hospital and coordinated by Dr Lucia De Zen.
The Historical Museum has already prepared “Miracards for Burlo”- special multi-entry passes that will be made available to all families of patients treated at the palliative care referral centre. Events dedicated to patients and their families will also be organised.
The initiatives that will be held at Miramare have a twofold purpose: on the one hand, to “lighten” the daily routine of children and their families with immersive experiences in the art and beauty of the historic site, and on the other hand to spread the knowledge and the meaning of palliative care. Palliative comes from the Latin word pallium, cloak that wraps, meaning to come alongside children and their families to help them achieve the best quality of life even in illness. Palliative means helping children and their families identify their needs, finding the most appropriate responses all together: health care, social services, schools, and volunteer work. This care is for children with incurable or potentially incurable diseases involving a high complexity of care and organisation. It is a right enshrined in law, and it is crucial for all citizens to know its meaning and value.
